SUMMARY:From Lodz to Tel Aviv: The Satirical World of Dzigan and Shumacher\, the Most Famous Yiddish Comedy Duo of the 20th Century
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for the Second Annual Eva and Martin Libitzky Memorial Lecture.\nTaube Philanthropies\, the Magnes Collection of Jewish Art and Life\, and Berkeley Center for Jewish Studies present: From Lodz to Tel Aviv: The Satirical World of Dzigan and Shumacher\, the Most Famous Yiddish Comedy Duo of the 20th Century\, featuring John Efron is the Koret Professor of Jewish History at UC Berkeley. \nFrom the late 1920s to the outbreak of WWII\, the comedy duo of Szymon Dzigan and Yisroel Shumacher enjoyed unparalleled popularity in Poland’s world of Yiddish entertainment. Household names and highly paid superstars\, their satirical monologues and political skits represented an unprecedented development in the nature of Jewish entertainment—modernist humor. Key to their material was language—the Yiddish of their native Lodz and their characters\, a Chaucerian parade of world-weary and world-wise Jews. After the Holocaust and their emigration to Israel\, they trained their satirical observations on the contemporary political situation in that country—a genre yet to exist in Hebrew entertainment. This talk seeks to account for the pathbreaking work of these beloved comic geniuses. \nPlease note this event will take place in person. \n\n  \nRegister here.

SUMMARY:34th Annual East Bay Tikkun: A Day of Learning on Shavuot
DESCRIPTION:[June 2 update] Due to the forecast of rain on Sunday\, all classes and venues are prepared to pivot to indoors with masks required. We intend to keep people as comfortable and safely-spaced as possible and will be making indoor/outdoor decisions as close to the start of classes as we can\, but please be prepared to be indoors in the case of inclement weather. Also\, please note that classes being hosted by Congregation Beth Israel (CBI) will now be held at the synagogue on 1630 Bancroft Way and not as previously scheduled at 1324 Allston Way. \nWe are happy to share that the 34th Annual East Bay Tikkun: A Day of Learning on Shavuot* will be in person this year. For COVID safety purposes it will be held during daylight hours and outside (weather-permitting) at a variety of participating venues in Central/North Berkeley. All attendees are required to be vaccinated and boosted in order to attend. \nAll attendees are required to register ahead of time: please click here to register. Once classes are confirmed\, those who’ve registered will be sent a follow-up link to register for specific classes. \nNew for this year’s Tikkun\, we will be offering programming in partnership with Edah and Tkiya Music for families with children in preschool through 5th grade. Families are invited to create art\, play games in Hebrew\, dance\, and learn some Torah! \nParticipating Venues\nJCC East Bay | 1414 Walnut Street Berkeley\, CA 94709\nCongregation Beth El | 1301 Oxford Street Berkeley\, CA 94709\nCongregation Beth Israel | [June 2 update] 1630 Bancroft Way Berkeley\, CA 94703\nCongregation Netivot Shalom | 1316 University Avenue Berkeley\, CA 94702 \nCommunity Partners (listed alphabetically and updated regularly)\nAquarian Minyan\nBerkeley-Oakland Midrasha\nBeyt Tikkun Synagogue Without Walls\nChochmat HaLev\nCongregation Beth El\nCongregation Beth Israel\nCongregation Netivot Shalom\nEdah at Studio 70\nEmbodied Jewish Learning\nGraduate Theological Union\nHebrew Free Loan of San Francisco\nJewish Community Center of San Francisco\nJewish Community Federation and Endowment Fund\nJewish Gateways\nJewish LearningWorks\nJewish Studio Project\nKehilla Community Synagogue\nNew Lehrhaus\nNigun Collective\nNishmat Shalom\nOr Zarua Reconstructionist Havurah of the East Bay\nProject Shamash (a program of Bend the Arc)\nShalom Bayit\nShalom Hartman Institute of North America\nTemple Sinai\nTkiya\nTorah of Awakening\nYeaShOre Community \n*We dedicate this year’s Shavuot learning to the memory of Rachel Brodie z”l.

SUMMARY:Holocaust Remembrance Day
DESCRIPTION:The JCC East Bay is proud to be a co-sponsor\, with Jewish Family & Community Services East Bay\, of the City of Berkeley’s 19th Annual Holocaust Remembrance Day program. \nThe program brings the community together to remember those who perished\, to honor those who survived\, and to recommit to vigilance against hatred\, persecution\, prejudice\, and tyranny. \nA candle lighting in memory of lost family and friends frames the hour-long program. \nThis year\, the community will honor Adela Mayer\, a distinguished Survivor of the Holocaust. Adela will share her experiences as a young child in Czechoslovakia\, who with her family\, evaded the Nazis by concealing their Jewish identity and fleeing into the forest many times\, to avoid capture. \nThe program also will feature musicians Heather Klein\, Soprano and Jason Manlapaz\, Pianist; poet Peter Dale Scott; and Tessa Rudnick\, granddaughter of Holocaust Survivor\, Jean Greenstein. \nClick here to reserve your free ticket to the virtual program.
