SUMMARY:I Am Not Afraid: A Holocaust Survivor Story for Teens and Parents
DESCRIPTION:Join the JCC East Bay and the JFCS Holocaust Center\, William J. Lowenberg Speakers Bureau for a valuable opportunity to hear from and engage with local Holocaust Survivor Ralph S.\, and learning the importance of remembering\, honoring\, and commemorating. This event is for teens and their parents. \nWe will begin with an interview with Ralph\, during which he will share his story and wisdom with us. After the interview\, there will be an open Q&A session\, where teens and parents will have the opportunity to engage with Ralph and learn more about his life and experiences. \n________________________________________________ \nRalph was born in Dresden\, Germany\, in 1931 to a Polish father and a mother whose family had lived in Dresden for 150 years. \n \nAt the age of 7½\, he was sent alone on a Kindertransport to England to escape the Holocaust and was later evacuated to the English countryside during the war. Ralph studied at the London School of Economics before immigrating to the United States at 27. He moved to California in 1962 and worked in public agency real estate\, including seven years with BART\, until his retirement in 1997. \nNow residing in Oakland\, Ralph shares his Holocaust experiences as a member of the JFCS Holocaust Center’s William J. Lowenberg Speakers Bureau\, speaking in schools and presenting the Oscar-winning documentary\, Into the Arms of Strangers. He has returned to Germany several times to speak at schools in Dresden and Heidelberg. \n________________________________________________ \nOur interview and discussion with Ralph are part of the annual Zikaron BaSalon (Remembrances in the Living Room) program. This program commemorates the Holocaust through intimate gatherings that allow for meaningful conversations and storytelling\, passing the torch from large ceremonies to conversations and stories told in more intimate\, meaningful spaces. \nThis event is the second in a series of Holocaust remembrance programs for teens and parents presented in partnership with The JFCS Holocaust Center. If you are viewing this page before March 25\, 2025\, we highly encourage you to join us for the first event: I Am Not: Holocaust Education for Teens and Parents. \n________________________________________________ \nRegister here.\n  \nThis program is proudly supported by the Israel Engagement Fund: A JCC Association of North America Program Accelerator and the Ministry of Diaspora Affairs.

SUMMARY:I Am Not Afraid: Holocaust Education for Teens and Parents
DESCRIPTION:Join the JCC East Bay\, Congregation Netivot Shalom\, and the JFCS Holocaust Center for an evening of Holocaust education and remembrance. This event is for teens and their parents. \nI Am Not Afraid will begin with a screening of A Great Big Secret\, an animated Holocaust documentary directed by Yoav Potash\, followed by an interview and Q&A session with Anita\, the survivor featured in the film. \nYoav Potash is an award-winning writer\, director\, and producer. He produced and directed the Sundance premiere documentary Crime After Crime\, a New York Times Critics’ Pick and winner of 25 honors\, including a Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award\, the National Board of Review Freedom of Expression Award\, and six audience awards. Yoav also directed Food Stamped\, winner of SF IndieFest’s Jury Prize\, and he recently produced and directed the feature documentary film Among Neighbors\, which won the Special Award at the Warsaw Jewish Film Festival and the Envision Award from the Jewish Film Institute. \nA Great Big Secret blends interviews\, archival footage and hand-drawn animation to tell the story of a Holocaust survivor. Born in the Netherlands\, Anita was a hidden child whose story was likewise hidden for decades. Anita shares a powerful message about the importance of remembrance and the strength of embracing our Jewish culture and identity in the face of rising antisemitism. We are deeply honored to host her for an open dialogue with our community. \nAs part of their preparation\, students enrolled in Netivot Shalom and JCC East Bay teen programs will engage in Holocaust Education lessons led by their teachers ahead of the event. \nThis event is the first in a two-part series of Holocaust remembrance programs for teens and parents being offered at the JCC East Bay. \nRegister here.\n

How are academic institutions helping to support and uplift Jewish life? What organizations and resources exist to support Jewish students? Let’s find out by asking our questions to Berkeley Hillel staff and college students and explore together what changes we can make to support Jewish students at every stage. \n  \n\nMay 5 \, 2024 – Remembering the Holocaust | Zikaron B’Salon\nZikaron BaSalon (“Remembrances in the Living Room”) is a special way to commemorate the Holocaust. Taking place annually in thousands of private living rooms and public settings\, it passes the torch from official\, large-scale remembrance ceremonies to conversations and stories told in more intimate\, meaningful gatherings. All are welcome to join this special gathering to hear and honor the Holocaust story of one of our community members. This event will include opportunities to reflect\, ask questions\, and ground our awareness and education about the Holocaust in a warm and supportive community\, with an age-appropriate lens. \nMay the memories of all lost in the Holocaust forever be a blessing.\nזיכרונם לברכה \n______________________________________________________ \n3-session series: $36\n2-session: $25\nSingle-session: $18\n*No cost for existing Midrasha teens/families \n______________________________________________________ \nThis series is presented in partnership by the JCC East Bay\, ADL\, and Berkeley Hillel.  \n\n  \nRegister here.

Forever Pure documents the 2012-13 season\, when a secretive transfer deal by the club’s owner brought two Muslim players from Chechnya. The deal inspired the most racist campaign in Israeli sport and sent the club spiraling out of control. Through one season we witness a team in crisis as power\, money and politics provide a window into how racism is destroying the team and society from within.\n\nClick here for tickets and information.

SUMMARY:[Cancelled] Movie\, Nosh\, Discuss: Paragraph 175
DESCRIPTION:In commemoration of National Holocaust Day\, our teens are invited to join us as we will take a closer look at the rarely told stories of the Nazi persecution of the LGBTQ+ population. during World War II. Paragraph 175 fills a crucial gap in the historical record\, and reveals the lasting consequences of this hidden chapter of 20th century history. These are stories of survivors – sometimes bitter\, but just as often filled with irony and humor; tortured by their memories\, yet infused with a powerful will to endure. Their moving testimonies\, rendered with evocative images of their lives and times\, tell a haunting\, compelling story of human resistance. \nClick here for tickets and information.
