SUMMARY:Zionism in Translation: Encounters in the German-Hebrew Archive at the UC Berkeley Center for Jewish Studies
DESCRIPTION:Organizer: UC Berkeley Center for Jewish Studies \nDate and Time: Tuesday\, October 6 @ 5:00-6:30pm \nLocation: 3335 Dwinelle Hall\, UC Berkeley campus \nIn her new book\, Zionism in Translation: Encounters in the German-Hebrew Archive\, Na’ama Rokem investigates written exchanges by a range of literary twentieth century authors\, including Hannah Arendt\, Gershom Scholem\, Yehuda Amichai\, Ludwig Strauss\, Erich Auerbach\, Walter Benjamin\, Leah Goldberg\, Peter Szondi\, Paul Celan\, and Tuvia Ruebner. This remarkable bilingual archive encompasses not only letters but also drafts\, reviews\, and other ephemeral documents. Written in German and Hebrew\, these documents were sent to and from Jerusalem\, primarily in the decades following 1948. \nThe writers at the center of Rokem’s study contend with the genocidal violence that brought the rich historical relation between German and Hebrew to a seeming end. They also grapple\, in different ways\, with the new reality in Israel/Palestine in the wake of the founding of the State of Israel and the Palestinian Nakba. The bilingual conversation that crosses over between German and Hebrew in these letters thus centers around the question of Jewish fate in the twentieth century and is immersed in negotiations about Jewish nationalism\, the Zionist movement\, and the possibilities of Jewish poetry. In the space between German and Hebrew\, Rokem argues\, the protagonists of her study articulate forms of ambivalence and doubt that remain absent from their published writings. \nIn this book presentation\, Rokem will discuss forms of belonging and resistance that emerged in relation to the Zionist movement throughout the twentieth century\, contributing to a more nuanced understanding of Jewish nationalism and its discontents. \nNa’ama Rokem teaches Hebrew and Comparative Literature at the University of Chicago\, where she has served as director of the Joyce Z. and Jacob Greenberg Center for Jewish Studies and as chair of the Department of Comparative Literature. Zionism in Translation: Encounters in the German-Hebrew Archive (University of Chicago Press\, 2026) is her second book. Her first book\, Prosaic Conditions: Heinrich Heine and the Spaces of Zionist Literature\, was published by Northwestern University Press in 2013. It uses the case of the reception and translation of the works of German-Jewish poet Heinrich Heine to argue that prose – as a figure of thought\, a mode and a medium – played an instrumental role in the literary foundations of the Zionist revolution. Currently\, she is working as one of the co-editors of the forthcoming Volume IV.2 of the Critical Edition of the Complete Works of Hannah Arendt (Essays and Short Writings on Jewish Politics) and starting a new research project on Zionism and pedagogy. \nRokem has been involved in a number of collaborative projects\, including The Quest for Modern Language: Between the Mediterranean and the Black Sea\, and Translation Networks and the Stakes of Comparison: Convergences and Crossings Between Arabic and Hebrew\, both sponsored by the Neubauer Collegium on Culture and Society at the University of Chicago\, and the Oak Woods Cemetery project\, a public history initiative that uses a historic cemetery in Woodlawn as a site for teaching\, programming\, and researching the history of the South Side of Chicago\, with a particular interest in the complexly intertwined histories of African Americans and Jews in the city. This project has received funding from the NEH\, the Mellon Foundation\, and the Women’s Board at the University of Chicago. \n

SUMMARY:Disasters of Biblical Proportions: Reimagining the Ten Plagues in the Age of Covid and October 7 UC Berkeley Center for Jewish Studies
DESCRIPTION:Organizer: UC Berkeley Center for Jewish Studies \nDate and Time: Wednesday\, October 7 @ 4:00-5:30pm \nLocation: 3335 Dwinelle Hall\, UC Berkeley campus \n\nThe biblical story of the ten plagues\, the series of disasters sent against Pharaoh and the Egyptian in order to compel them to free the Israelites\, introduced into collective imagination a connection between disaster and justice. In this presentation\, Steven Weitzman will explore how Jews\, Christians and Muslims have reimagined the biblical story to make sense of the disasters and injustices of their own age\, focusing on how the story has been reshaped in the wake of the traumatic events and protests that have unfolded since October 7\, 2023. \nSteven Weitzman serves as the Ella Darivoff Director of the Herbert D. Katz Center for Advanced Judaic Studies at the University of Pennsylvania as well as the Abraham M. Ellis Professor of Semitic Languages and Literatures in the Department of Religious Studies. His previous academic roles include directing Stanford’s Taube Center for Jewish Studies. Recent publications include The Origin of the Jews: the Search for Roots in a Rootless Age; the coedited Princeton Companion to Jewish Studies; Disasters of Biblical Proportions: the Ten Plagues Then\, Now\, and at the End of the World (the basis of this talk); and The Jews: a History\, co-written with John Efron and Matthias Lehmann and now in its fourth edition.

SUMMARY:Seeing Through a Mirror: The 1948 War in the Eyes of the World with the UC Berkeley Center for Jewish Studies\, Magnes Collection of Jewish Art and Life
DESCRIPTION:Organizers: UC Berkeley Center for Jewish Studies\, Magnes Collection of Jewish Art and Life \nDate and Time: Thursday\, October 22\, from 5:00-7:00 p.m.\nLocation: Magnes Collection of Jewish Art and Life\, 2121 Allston Way\, Berkeley\, CA \n\nAnnual Diller Lecture \nThe 1948 Arab-Israeli War attracted attention from the highest levels of international society\, state governments\, transnational NGOs\, journalism\, and public opinion. Palestine and the emerging state of Israel functioned as both a mirror and a magnifier. Israel’s establishment and the Palestinian Nakba were interpreted through countries’ specific interests\, histories\, and cultures. These events also elicited tremendous passion. Palestine’s mirroring and magnifying effects did not originate in 1948\, but the events of that year drastically augmented them\, and the patterns of global reaction remain with us to this day. \nDerek Penslar is the William Lee Frost Professor of Jewish History and the Director of the Center for Jewish Studies at Harvard University. Derek previously taught at Indiana University\, the University of Toronto\, and the University of Oxford\, where he was the inaugural holder of the Stanley Lewis Chair in Modern Israel Studies. Derek has published a dozen books\, including Theodor Herzl: The Charismatic Leader (2020) and Zionism: An Emotional State (2023). He is currently writing a book titled The War for Palestine\, 1947-1949: A Global History. Derek is a past president of the American Academy for Jewish Research\, a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada\, and an Honorary Fellow of St. Anne’s College\, Oxford.
