SUMMARY:Let's Talk About It: Navigating Conversations on Antisemitism
DESCRIPTION:A new program from the JCC East Bay that centers on teens\, and parents of teens\, to be in community as we learn and grow through diverse discussions.\n______________________________________________________ \nJanuary 28\, 2024 – Navigating Conversations on Antisemitism\nJoin us as we learn about the historical roots of antisemitism and how it shows up in school and online.\nFacilitated by the Anti-Defamation League\, the session will support teens and parents with suggestions and tools for responding to antisemitic incidents and provide space to discuss concerns and experiences within our community and reflect on how we can better support our families and teens. \n  \n\nMarch 3\, 2024 – Understanding Jewish Life on Campus\nWhat can it look like to be Jewish on school campuses? How are academic institutions helping to support and uplift Jewish life? What organizations and resources exist to support Jewish students? Let’s find out by asking our questions to Berkeley Hillel staff and college students and explore together what changes we can make to support Jewish students at every stage. \n  \n\nMay 5 \, 2024 – Remembering the Holocaust | Zikaron B’Salon\nZikaron BaSalon (“Remembrances in the Living Room”) is a special way to commemorate the Holocaust. Taking place annually in thousands of private living rooms and public settings\, it passes the torch from official\, large-scale remembrance ceremonies to conversations and stories told in more intimate\, meaningful gatherings. All are welcome to join this special gathering to hear and honor the Holocaust story of one of our community members. This event will include opportunities to reflect\, ask questions\, and ground our awareness and education about the Holocaust in a warm and supportive community\, with an age-appropriate lens. \nMay the memories of all lost in the Holocaust forever be a blessing.\nזיכרונם לברכה \n______________________________________________________ \n3-session series: $36\n2-session: $25\nSingle-session: $18\n*No cost for existing Midrasha teens/families \n______________________________________________________ \nThis series is presented in partnership by the JCC East Bay\, ADL\, and Berkeley Hillel.  \n\n  \nRegister here.

SUMMARY:An Evening Out with Hilary Zaid & Alex Green
DESCRIPTION:The JCC East Bay\, A Great Good Place for Books\, and Keshet present an evening out with award-winning author Hilary Zaid to celebrate the launch of her new book Forget I Told You This.\nJoining Hilary in conversation is Alex Green\, Editor-in-Chief of Stereo Embers Magazine and host of Stereo Embers: The Podcast. Mood-setting music for the evening provided by The Modest Orchestra (with Mike Waters\, Lee Bloom\, and Carla Kaufman). \n\nIn Forget I Told You This\, Amy Black\, a queer\, single mother and an aspiring artist in love with calligraphy\, dreams of a coveted artist’s residency at the world’s largest social media company\, Q. When a stranger asks Amy to transcribe a love letter for him\, his disappearance leads her straight to Q—with the chance to style herself a 21st-century soferet — and to a group of data privacy vigilantes who want her to burn Q to the ground. A very contemporary Jewish novel about faith\, free will and what it means to believe in an age of Artificial Intelligence\, Forget I Told You This asks us what it means to see and be seen in a world in which our every move is surveilled. \n  \nHilary Zaid has been a Tennessee Williams Scholar at the Sewanee Writers’ Conference\, a James D. Houston Fellow at the Squaw Valley Community of Writers and two-time attendee of Tin House Writers’ Workshop. Her work has appeared in Mother Jones\, Ecotone\, Day One\, The Southwest Review\, and The Utne Reader and elsewhere. Hilary’s novel Paper is White was long-listed for the 2018 Northern California Independent Booksellers’ Award for Fiction\, is a 2018 Foreword Indies silver medalist and the winner of the 2018 Independent Publishers’ Book Awards (IPPY) in LGBT+ Fiction. Forget I Told You This is the inaugural winner of the Barbara DiBernard Award. \n  \nAlex Green is a professor at St. Mary’s College of California\, Alex is the Editor-In-Chief of Stereo Embers Magazine\, the author of five books and has served as a Speaker/Moderator for LitQuake\, Yahoo!\, The Bay Area Book Festival\, A Great Good Place For Books\, Green Apple Books\, and The St. Mary’s College Of California MFA Reading Series. He’s the host of Stereo Embers: The Podcast\, a weekly program airing exclusively on Bombshell Radio that features interviews with musicians\, authors\, artists\, and actors talking about the current creative moment in their lives. Past guests include Taylor Jenkins-Reid\, Amy Ray of the Indigo Girls\, Juliana Hatfield\, David Duchovny\, and Congresswoman Jackie Speier. \n  \nRegister here.\n  \nThis event is presented in partnership by the JCC East Bay\, A Great Good Place for Books\, and Keshet. \n

SUMMARY:LABAlive: Original art inspired by Jewish texts
DESCRIPTION:Join LABA East Bay: A Laboratory for Jewish Culture at the JCC East Bay for a two-part series of art\, performance\, ancient Jewish text teachings\, wine and schmoozing. The works featured in LABAlive come from the 2022 LABA East Bay artist fellows\, and are inspired by their study of the theme of “BROKEN” in our open-minded\, non-dogmatic beit midrash. Come to one–or both! \nPART 2\n1) Filmmaker Sari Gilman shares a sample of her film-in-progress\, which explores the benefits and costs of belonging and her sometimes painfully\, other times beautifully\, fractured nature of her Jewish identity through an examination of her family’s divergent views on Israel.\n2) Choreographer/dancer Risa Jaroslow and two dancers will be performing “shards” of movement that Risa collected during the pandemic\, which\, together\, they have built into new choreography.\n3) Artist Leah Koransky presents a series of two-dimensional artworks which will incorporate light\, shadows\, and glass to explore “brokenness” as a visual language.\n4) Multidisciplinary artist David Israel Katz presents an installation based on the Aleinu\, underlining the elements of befuddlement and breakdown found in this notorious prayer text.\n5) Filmmaker Ken Paul Rosenthal presents a graphic video portrait of poet Julia Vinograd that is constructed from the individual letters of a poem she recites about God and Jerusalem’s broken romance.\n6) LABA scholar Sam Shonkoff will talk about that time the vessels of light containing the universe shattered into a million pieces. \nClick here to purchase tickets. \nClick here to view the line-up for Part 1.
