SUMMARY:From Lodz to Tel Aviv: The Satirical World of Dzigan and Shumacher\, the Most Famous Yiddish Comedy Duo of the 20th Century
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for the Second Annual Eva and Martin Libitzky Memorial Lecture.\nTaube Philanthropies\, the Magnes Collection of Jewish Art and Life\, and Berkeley Center for Jewish Studies present: From Lodz to Tel Aviv: The Satirical World of Dzigan and Shumacher\, the Most Famous Yiddish Comedy Duo of the 20th Century\, featuring John Efron is the Koret Professor of Jewish History at UC Berkeley. \nFrom the late 1920s to the outbreak of WWII\, the comedy duo of Szymon Dzigan and Yisroel Shumacher enjoyed unparalleled popularity in Poland’s world of Yiddish entertainment. Household names and highly paid superstars\, their satirical monologues and political skits represented an unprecedented development in the nature of Jewish entertainment—modernist humor. Key to their material was language—the Yiddish of their native Lodz and their characters\, a Chaucerian parade of world-weary and world-wise Jews. After the Holocaust and their emigration to Israel\, they trained their satirical observations on the contemporary political situation in that country—a genre yet to exist in Hebrew entertainment. This talk seeks to account for the pathbreaking work of these beloved comic geniuses. \nPlease note this event will take place in person. \n\n  \nRegister here.

SUMMARY:The Merchant of Venice (Annotated)
DESCRIPTION:Join the JCC East Bay and The Magnes for a Performed Reading and Discussion of Selections from The Merchant of Venice (Annotated)\, or In Sooth I Know Not Why I Am So Sad\nWednesday\, September 13\, 2023 | 7:00 – 9:00 pm\nWhat can a play from sixteenth century England tell us about how antisemitism and other prejudicial beliefs operate in our world today? What perceived truths does a play reveal about the society in which it was created\, and what ideas within that society does it reinforce? \nBringing together elements of Merchant with Elizabethan history and news from the 21st century\, theatre dybbuk’s The Merchant of Venice (Annotated)\, or In Sooth I Know Not Why I Am So Sad takes a kaleidoscopic view of the ways in which members of a society displace their fears on the “other” during times of upheaval. \nThe presentation at The Magnes will include approximately 75 minutes of readings from the work performed by actors from theatre dybbuk. The performance will be followed by a discussion with the artists behind the work\, during which the team will unpack the themes of the piece and share about the research and creation process. \nAdmission is free. \n  \nRegister here.
