Berkeley Summer Camp

Program Overview

JCC Summer Camp offers an intimate day camp experience where campers can discover new interests, test personal limits, and most importantly, have fun. In this exciting and safe environment, campers will celebrate Jewish traditions, make new friends, and develop meaningful relationships with their counselors. We aim to give campers a sense of Judaism in a whole new way as they experience and pursue the value of making the world a better place through service projects, song, art, dance, and drama. Any submissions received after April 1 will be reviewed on a rolling basis, and awards will be given based on remaining funds.

What ages are the campers at JCC Summer Camp?
Campers K-6th Grade are welcome!

Where is JCC Summer Camp located?
Our homebase will be at the JCC East Bay in Berkeley (1414 Walnut Street). Each age group will have access to their own classrooms, the JCC theater, our outdoor playground, as well as exploring local parks for games, lunch, and more.

How will pick-up and drop-off work?
Camp drop-off and pick-up will be at the parking lot entrance. Parents will not enter the building. Camp staff will escort the children from their parents to their groups.

AM Care and PM care will be at the main entrance. Parents will enter the building and turn to the left where a table will be set up to sign your child in and out.

Please note, late fees will be incurred for any camper not picked up at the allotted time.

What should my child bring to camp? And what about lunch and snacks?
Camper should bring a backpack with a non-perishable, nut-free, Kosher-style lunch (please no pork or shellfish, or mixing of milk and meat), full water bottle, sunscreen, and a hat. A change of clothes and a light sweatshirt is always a good idea. Please label everything.

Snacks will be provided during camp and PM extended care, but your camper is welcome to bring additional snacks, as desired.

How will you maintain social distancing?
The JCC will make every effort to maintain social distancing between campers and will be working with campers to learn about personal space and boundaries. We will limit intermingling between camp groups to emphasize social distancing and to minimize the number of people your children are exposed to.

Will masks be required for all campers and counselors?
In compliance with CDC recommendations, all campers and staff will be required to wear a face covering. Homemade cloth masks with a double mask underneath and medical-grade masks are permitted. Bandannas, scarfs, towels, and neck gaiters are not permitted.

Are vaccines required?
Yes. All campers will be required to be fully vaccinated (2 weeks past the second dose). If your child is booster eligible, a booster is required as well. Submission of your vaccine card or screenshot of the digital passport will be required. Submissions must be received AFTER May 1, 2022, but before your child begins camp.

What happens if a child or parent of a child is diagnosed with a confirmed case of COVID-19?
If there is a confirmed case of COVID-19 at the JCC, leadership staff will follow the guidance from the Berkeley Department of Public Health that includes protocols for closing, investigating, cleaning, and reopening. Any camper who tests positive will quarantine from camp for a minimum of 5 days. As campers will all be vaccinated, unless exposed campers are displaying symptoms, they will not be required to quarantine. Updated guidance will be shared prior to camp beginning.

What kind of cleaning will be implemented?
JCC East Bay housekeeping staff will perform ongoing manual disinfection of public areas and offices throughout the day. Daily cleaning of high contact surface areas will follow a strict cleaning schedule based on room usage. Janitorial staff will perform routine cleaning each night after staff have left the building. In the event of a presumed positive COVID-19 case, a deep-clean will be performed.

What type of training will staff receive?
Prior to camp, all staff will attend a week of in-person training of all policies and procedures, including age appropriate programming, Covid and non-Covid related safety procedures, training in effective communication, building community, inclusive programming, and much more.

What if my child falls into a vulnerable population?
It is recommended that your child stay at home.

How many campers will be in each age group?
Groups will be up to 16 campers, with 2-3 counselors at any given time.

Can we pick a friend for our camper to be with in a group?
Having friends at camp depends entirely on the registration and notice given - we will do our best to accommodate. Please email summercamps@jcceastbay.org with your request as soon as possible.

What about refunds?
Refunds will not be available after May 31, 2022. Until then all fees, less $500, are fully refundable. Partial refunds may be available if your child tests positive for COVID-19. A refund of up to one week may be available. Missing camp for any other reason is not eligible for a refund.

In Your Words

“This is honestly the best camp we’ve sent our kids to. My wife is Jewish and has hugely positive memories of her own JCC camps where she grew up, and the report from my kids match those memories. From the clear kindness of the counselors, the excellently done accommodations for my autistic child and pandemic in general, we’re so happy with our experience. As a non-Jew myself, I was so impressed at how well the focus was placed on the ethical components of Jewish life, and the fact that I always felt informed but not excluded. We will certainly be back.”

“The JCC East Bay knocked it out of the park with camp! The staff and counselors prioritized safety while providing my daughters with such fun, creative, and thoughtful programming. Can we do camp all year round?”

“During the extraordinarily difficult times of the pandemic, the JCC didn't just provide desperately needed child care support for parents, but also a safe, enriching, care-free, ruach-filled experience for the kids - a real blessing for the community these days.”

“JCC camp not only gave our energetic 7 year old a safe place to be during Covid times, it offered her new friendships, a deep sense of community, and a connection to Jewish values through discussion, song, and exploration. We are so very grateful for the gift of this camp.”
